Advanced course in the techniques, forms, and styles of dance in musical theatre. Movement studies are performed to familiarize students with a variety of musical theatre dance styles focusing on mid 19th through early 20th century dance forms. Survey of the early history of dance in the American musical theatre through readings, lectures, class discussions, student research, and films. Permission of instructor required. First semester of a two-semester sequence for seniors to develop and implement a capstone project across an academic year. Students select and research a specific area of interest such as choreography, performance, somatic studies, dance education, dance studies, or community engagement.
